Looking to buy or sell a used bike in Vancouver BC? Good news – great deals can be had now more than ever, whether you are looking for an entry level used bike or a pricey one.

Let’s face it – in our society, a lot of people want the ‘latest/greatest’ gadgets (including bikes) with new high tech features. And these are popping out on the market at lightning fast speeds. So what do they do with their old bikes? They sell them, giving you an opportunity to get a great bike at a lower price!

Buyers aren’t the only ones who benefit. Sellers getting rid of their old bike can gain some extra cash to help buy the new one of their dreams.

Here are some of the best places to buy or sell a used bike in Vancouver:

Used sporting goods stores

Second hand sporting goods stores are an ideal place to find used bikes. What sets them apart is their specialized focus and hand-picked selection. Unlike general thrift shops, these stores are dedicated to all things sports-related, meaning they attract sellers and staff who are passionate about sports (including biking) so you can often find higher quality inventory and a knowledgeable team to help you with your purchase. Here are some to consider:

Sports Junkies buys and sells used bikes and bike gear at their West Broadway store in Vancouver. Because their inventory changes so quickly, they don’t list their selection of used bikes on their website, however have a large selection in-store (they describe it as a ‘huge stockpile’) so be sure to check them out.

Sports Replay carries used bikes, parts, accessories, helmets, tires and more. While not as big of a selection as Sports Junkies, they do list their inventory on their website so you can easily have a look. For those selling, they accept trade-ins or consignment.

North Shore Sport Swap is a great place to go if you are looking for second-had bikes, parts, helmets, accessories and lights. They also carry some new bikes at great deals including Envo brand e-bikes. Bike technicians are on-hand if you need any services. Be aware that they only deal with used bikes from April to end September, so don’t go looking for bike deals in the middle of winter.

Bike stores carrying both new and used bicycles

The advantage of going to a store offering both new and pre-owned bicycles is the convenience of being able to browse through a diverse range of options all in one place. Looking at new bikes can help you decide what you need in a used bike. Or if you decide a new bike is the way to go then you are in the right place.

Bikes for All carries new bikes and a fairly large selection of used bikes for sale. They do post some on their website but have many more in their store. Interestingly they don’t buy used bikes; they only source their used bikes from friends of the store who donate their bikes. So visit them if you are interested in buying, not selling.

Cycle City Vancouver carries new and used bikes, repairs and maintenance, parts, accessories, bike rentals and guided tours. A locally owned shop located downtown, they pride themselves on fast and efficient service.

Online Classifieds and Websites

Consider taking advantage of the power of the internet. Buying a used bike through online classified websites comes with a bunch of perks. First, you’ve got an extensive selection at your fingertips, spanning various brands, models, and price ranges, all from the comfort of your couch. Plus, shopping online gives you the chance to compare prices and features effortlessly, ensuring you snag the best deal possible.

Another big bonus is the potential to find unique or vintage bikes that might not be available at traditional or local stores. Many sellers provide detailed descriptions and photos, so you can make an informed decision without even leaving your home. Browsing online classifieds for a pre-loved two-wheeler is definitely worth a spin. (And did we mention you don’t have to leave your couch?)

Kijiji – A general classifieds with a smattering of everything.

9 Bears – Our own classifieds specializing in cycling and ski sports.

Craigslist – Still popular in many cities with general classified listings.

UsedVancouver – A Vancouver specific used goods site.

Community Bike Shops

Vancouver has a community culture around active lifestyles, and that includes biking.

You can support non-profit community bike shops while buying a used bike. Not only can you find deals but you are also supporting a good cause at the same time. Bike communities exemplify how cycling is a passion to share with everyone regardless of their financial situation.

Non-profit community bike shops are vibrant hubs where cycling enthusiasts, advocates for sustainable transportation, and community members converge. These unique spaces are dedicated to promoting cycling culture while serving as invaluable resources for individuals from all walks of life. Often run by volunteers and staffed by passionate bike enthusiasts, these shops offer a myriad of services.

They usually provide affordable access to used and refurbished bicycles ensuring that cycling remains an accessible mode of transportation for everyone. Moreover, these shops can offer repair workshops, teaching essential bike maintenance skills and empowering individuals to become self-sufficient cyclists. Some allow you to book ‘bench time’ to fix your own bike under the guidance of qualified volunteer bicycle mechanics.

Beyond their practical services, non-profit community bike shops foster a sense of camaraderie and belonging, acting as gathering spots where people can share stories, exchange knowledge, and work together to promote cycling as a sustainable and healthy lifestyle choice.

Some of the community bike shops in Vancouver include:

Our Community Bikes – Located near Main Street and Highway 7 (East Broadway).

Kickstand – Located on Parker Street off Clark Drive.

Bike Kitchen – UBC’s community bike shop located on campus.

As you can see, your choices for finding used bikes in Vancouver are diverse. Whether you decide to try a community bike shop, a used sporting goods store, an online classifieds or shops carrying both used and new bikes, take advantage of the many options and start shopping for a used bike today!
